Did RIM get its sorry right?

What have we learned since Domino’s infamous Patrick Doyle apology?

  • Monitor the social web
  • Listen to what people are saying
  • Contribute to the conversation
  • Apologies for the inconvenience – even if you’re still investigation the issues
  • Promptly answer the questions people have
  • Be open, clear and honesty
  • And most important – be proactive!

So, how did RIM get on when faced with BlackBerry‘s service outage? – Hmm, not so good.

Considering the 2 years of learning, and numerous article written on the best ways to manage your reputation through social media, it’s takes days for response from Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis. And lets not even mention the, some might say, ‘miss-direction’ of the original response – no doubt done with the best intentions.

However, RIM are getting there. But this episode seems to point to the fact that there’s still some learning to be had when faced with crisis management!

To promote Tesco‘s new ‘Big Price Drop’ campaign, they’ve created some pretty cool press ads that use Image Recognition and Augmented Reality technologies to bring the ads to life via smartphones and tablets.

The Augmented Reality ads, using Blippar’s technology, launch animated versions, and provide an extra level of interactivity helping you to find the closest store, view recipe ideas related to the products in each ad and other store information.

Lucky lobsters

Here’s an interesting brand story – how to turn your pitch from one of consumption to one rich in ethically minded caring.

VML turned a coupon idea for Quiznos Lobster and Seafood Salad Sub into an engaging brand story. But would the audience bite?

When Quiznos introduced the Lobster and Seafood Salad Sub, they knew their customers would eat their fair share of these tasty crustaceans. So to show their appreciation, the more Lobster & Seafood Salad Subs their customers ate, the more lobsters they rescued. Now Larry, Lucky, Lainey and Lenny have tasted freedom once again. www.loneliestlobster.com.

New site for Wolff – curator of ideas?

October 7, 2011

Wolff Olins has recently launched a cool new site – www.wolffolins.com. The site is more ‘curator of ideas’ than it is ‘dictator or projects’, and I for one think it’s all the better for being so.

This is what they say about their redevelopment – “With this new version we’ve explored the idea of how brands truly exist online. Many brands are challenged with managing their digital landscape as it stretches across social media, owned sites and PR outreach. With out latest website we’ve created the ability to curate the conversation about Wolff Olins.”

The site takes the form of an amalgamation of all the activity and digital ‘chatter’ that exists around Wolff Olins, using video and data content mixed with all the social activity you’d expect. In this regard if feels a little like what CP+B are doing.

Having said that, it really is a site to experience, interesting content, interesting ideas and interesting work. Well done Wolff.

No iPhone 5 – but a little HTML 5 instead!

October 5, 2011

Yes, yes it is disappointing that it’s not the iPhone 5 (really Apple, you did hyped up the launch!). What we did get instead is a nice bit of HTML5.

Was the phone worth the wait? I think not! But the animation is up to the usual Apple cool.

Make a Mustang

October 4, 2011

Firstborn has just launched its new, and much improved, Car Customisation experience for the 2011/12 Ford Mustang. And with a few major upgrades to the site, it’s better than ever.

The revamped customiser offers four new base model Mustangs to work on, multiple perspectives and angles, and high-resolution images of real wheels, that you can repaint just the way you’d like one.

The smart introduction of ‘Battle Mode’ has helped push the experience into the social arena, by pitting your designs up against your friends through Facebook Connect, or going head-to-head with complete strangers. To up the ante on close friends, Nemesis mode allows your Facebook friends to vote on the rivalry in a hot-or-not style feature.

And the reward for all the user’s hard work? Win badges, download desktop wallpaper of your designs, and of course, earn the respect of your social peers – the main pull I would guess.

Key to the development of the new customiser is it’s integration into Facebook. It, above all of the upgrades, makes the site a really fun, creative and engaging experience. Even if you’re not in the market for a fuel guzzling four-wheeled monster (and who is in the current climate, and with fuel prices the way they are!), this is a brilliantly crafted site (what you’d expect from fborn), that’ll get your car creative fluid into full throttled overdrive.

Disney AppMATes

Today sees the launch of a nice idea from Disney for getting kids interested in using mobile tech (as if they really need encouragement!).

AppMATes are a new line of toys that comes to life digitally when used with an Apple iPad, allowing kids to use the tablet’s screen as a virtual play mat.

The AppMATes toy line features miniature Disney Pixar Cars 2 vehicles with sensors on the base of each toy that are recognised as a unique footprint by an app with no cable or Bluetooth connection required.

They say the toys are aimed at ages 4+, but I know someone a little older that’s like one too!
