The start of the new Formula One season sees McLaren F1 launch its new site.

Created by Work Club and Pirata the site really does set the bar for not only motor sports sites, but also the rest of us working on the web today. The site is an information marvel – it uses data as its heart to keep hardcore fans and general users alike, fully up-to-date with the second by second happening of the F1 team.

On the Creative Review Blog Work-Club’s Andy Sandoz, the idea is that the site is “designed as if a computer compiled it, with the pit lane race screens in mind. You see what they see.”

As a user of the site you get a real sense of the race experience – live data feeds worked well in setting the drama, especially when viewed along side the TV coverage.

The data steaming is great, but it’s the design that really sets McLaren apart. It looks fresh, clean and highly functional. Most notable is its strong typographical style – breaking the Arial grip on the web – and its iconographically led content.

For me, it one of those ground breaking sites where the creatives have dared to do something different and the client has been brave enough to say “Yes”. I love it, and expect to see many more sites ‘influenced’ by this stunning work.
